How to Be Funny

I think the ability to be funny is something you either have or you don't. I don't think it can necessarily be learned. However, the execution and mechanics can be learned, so that those with a sense of humor (most people) can learn to write or perform comedy at some level.

Some of us here use humor in our blogs, some of us (me) go straight for what we hope is funny, and others of us stick with the serious-minded role-play route. I read a post on the Dilbert Blog the other day that I think would be helpful for those of us who employ comedy in our blogs or for anyone who writes comedy. And Scott Adams knows funny. His Dilbert comic is in over 2000 newspapers worldwide.

In the post, Scott explains a theory of his called the "2 of 6 Rule". In a nutshell, in order to be funny something must fall into at least two of the following six categories:
Cute
Naughty
Bizarre
Clever
Recognizable (Been there. Done that.)
Cruel

Think about the funniest blog post, movie, or TV show you know and I bet you'll be able to describe it with at least two of those adjectives. Now think about a blog post, movie, or TV show that was supposed to be funny, but didn't quite hit the mark. Maybe it was really cute, but it just wasn't clever, cruel, bizarre, naughty, or recognizable enough.

Anyway, check out the link if you're interested. Hopefully you'll find it as helpful as I did.

That's the funny thing about irony -- it's so ironic.

It was informative.

Though I'm starting to feel Master Yoda might be hinting at something, but I'm not quite sure what... ;)

If the title were "How to be Ironic," it wouldn't be very ironic, would it?

I've used this formula before. It works. The thing with Jar Jar is that some people actually find him cute by himself. It's a matter of taste.

It looks like the role-players are going to have to leave at some point.

My movies do not fall into any of those categories! My humor is what you call "dry humor"

I like both serious & funny stories, I would be depressed if the serious ones left!!

I just Prefer to try to write humor, thats just my taste.

At the same time I enjoy reading the stories of those who are able to do the real thing, role players.

It inspires some of my stories.

And Jar Jar, I'm note sure if you are Cute, and How do you taste ?

Like Chicken ?? :) :) :)

Not at all!!

We need both kinds of writers to round out the group. I was just trying to share something I found to be personally helpful. And I was just pointing it out to whoever might be interested.

Those of you who role-play, keep on keepin' on.

Oh, and no, Claire, I wasn't hinting at anything :p

I miss Bloom County. A fat abiguously gay penguin taking on Reaganomics. Now that's comedy.

Berkely Breathed brought back everybody's favorite penguin in a relatively new strip called "Opus" a few months ago. It's only a Sunday comic though.

You got Si Nunew (or whatever his name is) from Bloom County, didn't you?

Good eye, b'Yoda. I did get Sinew Nu from Bloom County. Obviously his name is a riff on John Sununu as well, a frequent target of Breathed.

I do know about the Opus strip, I've read it a few times and it's funny, but I don't subscribe to a paper. If only there were some sort of inter-networked system of transferring data from and to a workstation of some sort at my house. Maybe I could see it that way.

There is! It's called "carrier pidgeon". But if you want an alternative, you could always go here: http://www.berkeleybreathed.com/images/thisweekstrip.jpg
